Zagreb Youth Theater (Croatia)
Directed by: Jernej Lorenci
Eichmann in Jerusalem is the author's project of the renowned Slovenian director Jernej Lorenci, based on the motifs of the text of the same name by the German philosopher Hannah Arendt, set as an attempt to reconstruct the nature of evil by performing questioning of the elements that make up a historical event of devastating consequences such as the Holocaust.
Few works of philosophy or political science have had such an impact on the general culture as Hannah Arendt's book about the trial of Adolf Eichmann, the organizer of the transportation of Jews to the Nazi death camps. She coined the term "banality of evil", and she describes the war criminal Eichmann like the main character of Croatian black chronicles: he is a calm, orderly neighbor who always greets politely. This performance of the Zagreb Youth Theater makes a broad gesture with the help of different media, from the documentary film "Shoah" by Claude Lanzmann, through Jaspers' lectures united in the study "The Question of Guilt", or the novel "Skin" by Curzio Malaparte, all the way to the feature film "The Trial at Nuremberg " directed by Stanley Kramer.
Eichmann in Jerusalem was staged at a moment when practically all of Europe was questioning its anti-fascist foundations, and when you watch the play, you realize that the director and actors openly, and yet not through pamphlets, confronted you with the darkness that preceded us and who is here again, offering us love as the only possible answer to him.
Eichmann in Jerusalem is a performance of the synergistic effect of education and art that creates conscious and free-thinking young people capable of creating analogies and critically reflecting on the past, present and future. Slovenian director Jernej Lorencija, together with the actors of the ZKM Theatre, understood very well the importance of questioning the banality of evil and its presence in every human being, as an important lever in sensitizing young generations to various forms of intolerance and discrimination, and encouraging reflection and action in a world where they live. Eichmann in Jerusalem comes at a moment when practically all of Europe is questioning its anti-fascist foundations, and when you watch the play, you realize that the director and the actors have openly, and yet not through pamphlets, confronted you with the darkness that preceded us and which is again there, offering us love as the only possible answer to him. The theater is thus once again the most relevant place for reflection and resistance to worrying social trends.
The ZKM Theatre is a modern, prestigious theatre hand in hand with recent European trends in performing arts, recognized and respected outside the Croatian borders as well. Multidirectional programming guidelines, an experienced and agile ensemble, the College as the core of future professionals and the- atre-conscious audience, openness to projects of the non-institutional scene, and a preference for exploring and various interlacings of genre make it a special and important junction on the Croatian theatre map. By networking with a number of international organizations, hosting guest performances and participating in co-productions, the ZKM Theatre has established its position in the European theatre space as well. In a wider cultural context, it enables the conditions for the development of various artistic practices, encourages creativity and cultural and spiritual enrichment, recognizes positive social values, and impacts their growth.
