HERMES

He is not angelic, nor demonic, but a personification of ambivalence. He is neither a god nor an animal, and though more human than either, he is not entirely human. He is an old man and a young athlete, exuberantly cheerful and theatrical. He is a master of crude pranks, but also dangerous, cynical, and cruel. He is both destructive and comic, but also carries the seriousness of a hero who is at the mercy of his own desires, like a child. He flatters, mocks, cavorts, contemplates, pursues, flees, fights, wins and loses, sells and betrays, seduces and abandons...

TranzDanz is a contemporary dance company that was founded by Gerzson Péter Kovács in 1987 in Budapest, Hungary. Gerzson Péter Kovács invites the most talented soloists from the world of contemporary dance, classical ballet, and folk dance to be a part of his constantly evolving company. The musicians that collaborate with TranzDanz come from a diverse range of backgrounds, including electric noise music, neoclassical contemporary, acoustic ethno-jazz, innovative DJs, folk music, and early baroque.

Gerzson Péter Kovács has created an integrative dance vocabulary that combines Hungarian and Carpathian Basin folk dances with contemporary dance techniques, representing a unique direction in Hungarian contemporary dance. Rather than resisting change, Gerzson Péter Kovács believes in responsibly adapting to it by facing the truth, confronting challenges, and mobilizing the static.

TranzDanz has performed in multiple cities around the world, including Budapest, Paris, London, Berlin, New York, Tel Aviv, Toulouse, Vienna, Liechester, Erhlangen, Potsdam, Bucharest, Frankfurt, Gyergyó, Copenhagen, Veszprém, Amsterdam, Singapore, Warsaw, Lublin, Hamburg, Montreal, Lille, Biarritz, and Nagyharsány.

Since the formation of TranzDanz, founder Gerzson Péter Kovács has created 42 pieces for the company, 11 site-specific productions and 14 theatre-directing works, along with 62 light design works.

Attila Tókos personifies the intriguing character of Hermes in a solo of 53 minutes created especially for him, making use of talents for which he has been widely recognized as recipient of the Harangozo Prize, the Junior Prima Prize and as soloist with the Hungarian National Folk Dance Company. His 10-year history of performing in TranzDanz creations has laid the groundwork for this new solo, incorporating the amalgam of folkdance and contemporary technique that is the language of choreographer/production designer Gerzson Péter Kovács and for which Attila is a virtuoso interpreter.
