National Theatre Mannheim
SECOND EXILE
Directed by Oliver Frljić
In Second Exile, Frljić looks back on a time period of more than 20 years, since he first came to German soil as an asylum seeker back in 1995. Together with actors from Germany and former Yugoslavia, he positions individual destinies in relation to the global refugee crisis. In times of growing nationalism, increasing intolerance towards minorities and the threat to artistic freedom, we are facing the question: Europe, where are you heading?
In 1992, 16-year-old Oliver Frljić fled from the war in Bosnia to Croatia and became a part of the “Nation of Refugees”. Being a refugee means to be persecuted for reasons beyond one’s control – place of birth or parents’ nationality – and to be at the mercy of the despotism of state institutions.
In 2017, Frljić goes once again into exile. As director of the Croatian national theatre in Rijeka, the coming to terms with war crimes and war trauma take centre stage in his artistic work, for which he has received death threats and been called an enemy of the state.
